Can anyone help me with translting demotic writing?
Im thinking of a tattoo design and I want it in an ancient writing. Any suggestions as to which language? or if u can help me with demotic.
While δημοτικός (demotikos) simply means ‘popular’, there are at least two possible language you might be referring to.
- Demotic Greek, a variety of the Greek language (1) or
- Demotic (Egyptian), a script and stage of the Egyptian language (2)
It seems quite common to get a tattoo in a language you cannot speak nor comprehend. I would be very careful with picking the right translation, for I have seen people ‘advising’ an asker to a tattoo with (Hebrew example!) ‘the Aryans and the sheep’ or ‘Harry and the sheep’ when he asked for ‘the lion and the sheep’.
So find someone who is really able to help you in this matter. For your Demotic Egyptian for example I would consult an university professor of this special faculty. Writing him a nice email will perhaps work, for most profs are very keen on promoting their ego when you approach them with a question ‘only they’ can answer…
