Depends what part of the language of Japanese you’re talking about. Chinese and Japanese use many of the same characters . In Chinese it’s called hanzi, in Japanese it’s called kanji, but they mean the same thing. Most of them are written exactly the same, but there are a few with slight differences.
In Japanese there’s also two types of “alphabets”, katakana and hiragana.
Personally I think using the hanzi/kanji would be better, they have more meaning than the Japanese alphabets which are only phonetic and don’t have any meaning on their own. My advice is to research carefully, as many people get tattoos meaning something different to what they had planned, or worse, not making any sense at all!
