A Question about the safety of tattoos?

Is it true that if a women gets a tattoo near or on her hip or belly or anywhere near her womb she cannot have pain medication when having a baby? Is there any kind of risk with that or health hazard?

Ok, benito – the answers I see from you are usually spot on, but this one I’m afraid you are wrong on.

I know more about babies and the childbirth process than you could know lol.

I did not have my lower back tattoo when I had my son (and epidural!), but I know SO many women who had the epidural with lower back tattoo.

I also have one good friend who is a midwife currently working in delivery. I began to doubt my sanity when hearing this rumour so often – and a while ago, asked her if there was any truth in it. There is not.

But seeing is believing, right? So luckily – last year I was a birth partner for my best friend. I was with her through every moment of her labour, including the injection of the epidural. And guess what, she has a full lower back piece, and yes it did cover the area in which the epidural was injected! (I watched them put it in – I enjoy gruesome sights!).

It’s fallacy. A woman can have an epidural with a lower back tattoo.

As for the other pain relief alternatives (pethidine and gas and air, in this country) – there are obviously no issues as they aren’t administered in the back.
