How on earth do I become a tattoo artist?
I know i have the talent to, but I’ve No idea how to start training/working in the industry, help me out!
You will need to complete an apprenticeship under a reputable tattoo artist. Find a tattoo artist who is willing to take you on as an apprentice and work from there. Expect to get rejected a lot – finding someone who is willing to invest their time as your mentor can be difficult. Be open to the possibility of relocating for you apprenticeship – do not settle for a mentor who is not good at what they do. IAM.BMEzine.com is a great resource for people in the industry and those who are trying to start a career. Expect to spend two to three years apprenticing at the very least. Definitely STAY AWAY from “Tattoo Schools,” they are a huge waste of money and don’t teach you what you need to know. It is a good idea to be certified in CPR, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens. Anatomy classes are also a good idea if you have access to them.
Be aware that a good portion of your apprenticeship will be spent watching others work. The first part will likely be spent acting as a gopher for your mentor, picking up supplies, cleaning tools, learning the basics of the shop. You will not start tattooing right away, nor should you expect to. From there, you might start drawing small pieces, then tattooing things that are NOT people, then tattooing your friends in the shop.
Until you get an apprenticeship, hone your drawing skills. Don’t run out and buy a tattoo kit off of ebay – wait it out until you find someone who can teach you. Good luck!
