Tattoo Creator Writing
tattoo creator writing

When you got a tattoo of art that was not your own, did you ask the artist for permission?
Say you wanted a tattoo of Dr. Zoidberg from Futurama. You could get it tattooed on you with little/no risk of being harassed for copyright laws, but would you write to the creator of the character to ask for permission? I want to get a tattoo of a character from an animated movie I love and I’m going to write the creator of it to tell/ask him about it. Did you do the same? I don’t expect a response, but I want to write anyway because I respect him so much as an artist.
Edit: I know I won’t get in trouble, if you’d read my post, you’d see that. I’m asking if you asked for permission out of respect for the artist. I realize I’m definitely in the minority on this one, I just wonder if anyone else did. I have a tattoo of something someone else created and I would have written him to tell him, but he died a few years before I got the tattoo.
If I were to ever get an Amy Brown faerie, I would write her first and ask her permission. If I were to get a Dr Zoidberg tattoo, I would write the show creator and ask permission. Yes, we are definitely the minorities, but we would also rest assured that we did our best to get permission about it.
*Disclaimer* I have my tattoo artist draw all original things for my tattoos so I don’t have to worry about things like this.
