Ink variations and tattoo care?
Ok I know that there are several different brands of ink and even makeshift methods of conjuring the ink up. I’ve heard many different instructions on the care of a tattoo, mostly the substance that should be used to keep it moist. The 3 week no sun and 2 week no swimming is pretty much universal. But depending on the type of ink that the tattoo was done with, is that why there’s so many different care instructions? I’ve heard neosporin is good, then the artist said it was no good. Is this because of the type of ink he used? There’s all kinds of of tattoo care products that exist, but my artist insists that cocoa butter is the most effective care substance. Is this due to the type of ink that was applied?

I suspect there are multiple answers as there actually are multiple right ways – or at least multiple sufficient ways – to do aftercare. I mentioned this in another answer where I noticed the primary concern was to keep the area moisturized, and how was more a matter of preference.
I guess it’s like how to cure a cold – everyone has their own home remedy.
There is also an issue of multiple skin types. I’m actually somewhat on the non-dry side, and lots of moisturizer causes me to break out. What works for my gf – who has fairly dry skin – doesn’t for me.
With respect to neosporin and other tribiotics: that’s something an artist will have to answer. I’ve always heard the Vaseline base will pull out the color and make a tattoo blotchy in addition to the allergic reaction problem. I know the latter is true since I’m allergic to non-trivial amounts, but then that is probably the Vaseline and the other components causing the reaction. However, for probably obvious reasons, I don’t know about the former. I certainly don’t want to be a guinea pig on that one.
