La Ink: My Chemical Romance Guitarist Gets Inked by Kat Von D
Fans of the TLC reality television series LA Ink got to watch tattoo artist and Miami Ink veteran Kat Von D apply her skin inking magic on another player of the music industry. Following up from Scott Ian of the band Anthrax in the previous episode, the portrait savant then worked on Frank Iero, the rhythm guitarist of the alternative rock group My Chemical Romance, during the chapter titled “Kat’s Gnarly Day” which was broadcasted last Tuesday. Iero is a 25-year-old native of Bellevue, New Jersey, and the tattoo he requested from Kat Von D features a family member close to his heart.
Iero explained that the tattoo he wanted was an image of his grandfather, who is also named Frank, and is likewise a fellow musician who plays the drums instead. He shared during the episode that his grandfather also wanted him to become a drummer ever since he was born, as well as one of his most cherished memories of seeing a younger picture of his grandfather at 30 years old. Even now at his present age of 85, Frank the elder still continues to play regularly every weekend, as his favorite pastime. The younger Iero got the picture and sent it over to Kat Von D, who complied and said that they could definitely create a tattoo in his grandfather’s image for the guitarist.
As part of the artistic design during his stay in the High Voltage tattoo studio, on Iero’s upper arm were inked the words “My family, my hero,” in the Italian language. He also explained that he’s had other body art commissions done in the past, though many of them were painful to undergo. But in spite of his past troubles with tattoos and their stinging soreness, he says that he’s satisfied with the result of Kat Von D’s efforts, and that it’s a worthy tribute to his grandfather.
