Job Search Basics For Your TeenâS Success
Just a couple years earlier, the U.S. had almost full employment; things are certainly different now. Every day the news reports additional cutbacks and layoffs. Teens today are competing with older workers, who have lost their jobs, for entry level positions. Don’t let this discourage you; teens still have plenty of opportunities to find a good job. Remembering these simple rules will guarantee success in your job search.
1. Compose a resume and attach it to every job application you turn in. Let a parent or teacher read over your resume, inviting any advice for making it better. Make certain that you conduct a spelling check as well as a check for grammatical errors.
2. Use good manners when requesting job applications as well as during the actual interview. Wear conservative apparel and make sure you are neatly groomed. Young males should choose collared shirts and dress pants. Young females should wear modest apparel and minimal cosmetics. If you have tattoos, keep them covered and take out any visible body piercings.
3. Don’t wear perfume or cologne, as many people are allergic.
4. Be enthusiastic and look the interviewer in the eye as you are interviewed for the position.
5. Make sure your breath is fresh, but never chew gum.
6. Hold yourself straight and upright; avoid slouching. Bad posture leaves an impression that you are lazy or lack interest. Proper posture says to the interviewer that you have self-discipline. Avoid any nervous fidgeting.
7. Plan on arriving 15 minutes before the interview. Unplanned traffic situations could add to your drive time, so leave early. Making the interviewer wait for you to arrive will not help you get the position.
8. Speak confidently about yourself and the skills you have that will benefit the employer. Have a confident tone to your voice, but avoid seeming boastful.
9. Use proper grammar when speaking; don’t use slang.
10. Getting a parent or friend to ask questions in a mock employment interview will allow you to feel at ease for the real interview.
A lot of these tips seem so apparent that it sounds funny to list them. But you would be amazed at the number of adults who don’t recognize these simple suggestions. These are difficult times, with a lot of would-be workers competing for the same minimal number of jobs. Remain positive and don’t lose hope if you don’t get chosen the first time you apply for a job. Your persistence will eventually be rewarded. Good luck with the job hunt!
