Tattoo Apprenticeship

tattoo apprenticeship

Tattooing is one of those subjects that elicit a strong feeling from just about everyone. Some people have a strong dislike for them while other people love them. If you really have love tats, you might be thinking about getting into the business. If so, you’ll need to understand the art of the tat.

Johnny Cash cut an epic album performing for prisoners at San Quentin. He didn’t just do it off the top of his head. It was the culmination of years of work, practice and playing. Being a tattoo artist is a similar situation. You don’t just start out good unless you are extremely lucky. I’ve never heard of anyone who was. Regardless, a good tattoo artist is going to need to put in the time.

Never in my life did I think I would ever see tattoo reality programs. Some are better than others, but all tend to show the same thing when it comes to the artist side of the game. The accomplished tattooist just seems to do it naturally while there is usually an apprentice that learns by apparently sweeping the floor and doing errands! Neither scenario is true. The artist has put in years of blood, sweat and tears – literally! The apprentice definitely puts in their dues, but there is much more going on that is rarely shown and it is the key to becoming a good tattooist.

The art of tattooing is primarily about the art. It doesn’t take that long for someone to learn how to tattoo a butterfly or some other pre-printed image. To really separate yourself from the crowd, however, you have to come up with your own style and portfolio. The body is covered by flesh, but it is still your canvas.

If you want to get into tattooing, you need to be practicing your drawing skills. I am talking morning, day and night. Only then will you develop a style that is your own and a look that will have people traveling from miles around to give you the privilege to work on their canvas.
