scratchers and kits?
…those two words seem to go hand in hand Ive found. My question is this. For those who would get online and purchace the equipment, and fake skins, and grapefruits, learn to sterilize their space and equipment correctly, take the bbp class etc, why is this person still called a scratcher? Why is it that you have to apprentice(and if you can’t find anyone to do it, well then too damn bad right?) in order to be able to tattoo? Is this not a double standard in some cases, that the person who may have apprenticed you at one time knew nothing about the art, self taught, and then went on to do great things? Im curious. Thanks in advance!
Actually, if you are looking around the industry and the culture (not these boards where half the people talking don’t have tattoos) Self-taught is different from scratcher–the term scratcher refers to the person that thinks it would be “cool” to be a tattoo artist so they invest $200 in a kit and invest nothing else–no time no energy and no skill. Many tattoo artists are self taught, but the good ones inevitably seek out the help of their peers, research proper methods and devote a large chunk of their life to learning a living the art.
Scratchers tattoo in their basements or kitchens. Scratchers don’t know that there is a HUGE difference between a grapefruit and my delicate skin. Scratchers read Savage and nothing else.(no offense to Savage readers, I enjoy it, along with many other things) Scratchers don’t join the APT, they don’t keep up with where the industry is, and where it is going.
As for people not wanting to share the art. My husband owns a shop and we went through one would be apprentice after another-Why? Because they weren’t willing to prove themselves. If you want an apprenticeship you have to show that you REALLY want it, that you aren’t just some prima donna rock star wannabe. Draw, clean, scrub tubes, build needles-(Sure you can buy needles and tubes now a days but every tattoo artist should know how, it is part of the history).
Despite how it appears on TV being a tattoo artist is hard work.
