Is Tattoo Ink Toxic

Pad printing inks are composed of solvents. It is the process of the evaporation of these solvents from the inks which is the main mechanism for operating the process of pad printing. When the ink is contained within the etched image area this evaporation of solvents causes the surface of the ink to become tacky. The shape and flexibility of the pad is such that as soon as it compresses on the plate the printing surface of the pad rolls across the plate, as a result of which it comes into contact with the tacky surface of the ink. The ink sticks to the pad, as the pad lifts the printing surface rolls away from the plate and lifts up ink from the etching.
As the pad moves along towards the object to be printed the solvent continues to evaporate from the ink on the pad and the outside surface of the ink becomes tacky. As the pad makes contact with the object and compresses, the print surface of the pad rolls across the object and the tacky surface of the ink attach itself to the surface of the object. The pad then lifts and the printing surface of the pad rolls away from the surface of the object and releases the ink leaving it laying on the surface. Whilst this is happening the etched portion of the plate is recharged with ink, and the pad returns to pick up another image from the plate.
These are the basic process of pad printing. But we should also know some of the simple rules for preserving the ink and the color of the pad printing ink also. Some of these rules are as below:
* The ink should always be stored in a dry, well-ventilated, dark place with a temperature between 10°and 25°C. Care should be taken to avoid direct rays of the sun.
* The ink which has been mixed with colors should be stored for a long time.
* The ink should also be always stored a distance from any source of heat and as well fro acid or alkaline products.
* The containers should be tightly closed and should be placed in the standing up position.
* After using a container of ink it should be quickly closed again in order to prevent the remaining ink from drying out, or a crust forming on the top. It is advisable to cover the ink with a layer of thinners of the same series as the ink.
* The catalysts used in bi-component inks are usually hygroscopic and can lose effectiveness in a damp atmosphere, if the containers are left wholly or partially open.
* The manufacture’s technical specifications regarding safety measures, risk prevention and hygiene.
* The recipient where the ink is prepared, as well as all the utensils used during preparation, must be kept clean and in perfect condition, in order to avoid contaminating the ink preparation.
It is also very essential to keep the ink trays, blades, mixing containers, spatulas, plates, etc thoroughly clean after each use in order to avoid any possible incompatibility, which may lead to a mixture of ink or auxiliary products of a different type
Before using pad printing ink a proper knowledge of ink mixing is very essential in order to achieve a quality imaging with screen printing or pad printing. If the mixing is not done properly, the entire printing process may go all wrong, as result of which it may cause a loss of production and a waste of valuable money, time and energy.
