1.    First off, getting a foot tattoo will be more painful that other areas of your body. You need to be prepared for this. Every person has a different threshold for pain so the level of discomfort will vary from person to person.
The reason foot tattoos are so painful is that there is very little flesh in that area and the nerve endings are closer. If this is your first tattoo, for less pain consider a more fleshy part of the body. If you have had other tattoos done, know that feet tattoos will be more painful.
2.    Second, tattoos on the feet will age faster than tattoos on other areas of your body. They will fade faster and will have the tendency to spread (resulting in blurring the image) over time.
There are several reasons feet tattoos fade more quickly. This type of tattoo is in an area that gets a lot of rubbing and friction with walking, sock and shoes. Also, this is an area that doesn’t get as much protection from the sun if you wear sandals a lot. The sun will fade a tattoo. To slow down the fading process it is very important to apply a high spf sun block lotion over your tattoos all the time. Most people forget the feet or don’t re-apply as often as they should in this area, resulting in excessive harmful exposure to the sun… and premature fading.
3.   Third, the healing process is more complicated with foot tattoos. It is best to get tattoos on the feet when the weather is warmer. For proper healing to take place you should not wear shoes or socks for at least the first week, sometimes more. So you need to plan a time when you can get away with just wearing sandals while the new tattoo heals.
Also, be prepared for swelling as your foot heals which will make walking somewhat difficult for a few days up to two weeks.
Be sure to keep your foot tattoo as clean as possible during this healing time as it is closer to the ground and will be more susceptible to infection. You should not soak your new tattoo in water, but you can wash gently with a light soap and water and pat dry with a towel.
