Staph is the shortened form of Staphylococcus (pronounced: staf-uh-low-kah-kus), a type of bacteria. These bacteria can live harmlessly on many skin surfaces, especially around the nose, mouth, genitals, and anus. But when the skin is punctured, pierced or broken for any reason, staph bacteria can enter the wound and cause an infection.
For many parents the idea of letting their teenagers get pierced is a scary thing. Parents should consider that piercing is not something that was invented overnight. Many cultures dating back thousands of years have used piercing and tattoos as a symbol of importance, religious beliefs and yes even as decoration.
Ways to Get Pierced
The simplest and widely used method is the standard needle method. The hollowed-out needle is used to pierce the body. After completely piercing a particular body part, the piece of jewelry – usually a stud, is inserted through the hollow needle.

There are risks to body piercing, a few of which are very serious. For instance, one can conceivably acquire bacterial infection from contaminated needles and piercing tools. Some may experience dental damage, keloids, excessive bleeding, nerve damage, and allergic reactions. Worst of all, one could contract HIV if the piercing tools used were not properly sanitized.
Oral piercing
If done improperly, there is every chance of your teeth chipping or breaking due to lip and tongue rings. Ask for studs in the lip to be placed in a neutral space along the lower gum line. This will prevent damage around the mouth area. Tongue piercing needs to be angled such that they do not catch in the palate on the roof of your mouth or the sublingual web along the bottom.

Usually it will cost between $50 and $150 to have it done, so you’ll definitely want to save up some money before you have it done.
If you have an especially mature teen that you feel is ready for this step, then it may not hurt to let them go ahead and make this choice.
