After Tattoo Care Lotion

tattoo care after initial healing?
I just got a tattoo yesterday. I’m aware of all the care I need to put on it for the first 2-3 weeks until it’s done peeling, scabs are gone, etc.
But after that period of time, say 3 weeks to a month, and beyond.
Do you still have to care for it like you do when you first get it?
Such as ointment or lotion every day? And can you shower normally without letting water not hit it directly? etc.
Thanks.
Aftercare of a healed tattoo varies from person to person…
You should keep the skin hydrated…Using moisturizers/lotions especially within the first year really aid in ink life. You do not have to apply them as often as you do with a brand new tattoo. Ideally, you should put some on when you get out of the shower (it aids in moisture absorbtion), but as long as you are not allowing the skin to become dehydrated and flaky, simply putting it on once or twice a week will suffice. After the first year, it’s still a good idea to keep the tattoo moisturized..
After the tattoo has healed, you can resume all of your normal water activities-showers, baths, swimming, etc. The new layer of skin that forms over the tattoo once the scab falls off protects the tattoo ink and safeguards against possible infections from questionable water quality, so preventing the water from coming into contact with it really isn’t necessary….also, you can wash the skin just like you would any other part of your body after the initial healing time.
If your tattoo is going to be exposed to sunlight, I suggest covering it with sunscreen. This will help keep your ink from fading. They do sell “special” lotions that protect the ink from the damaging sun rays, but sunscreen works just as well. Sunscreen is cheaper, you get more of it for your money, and you can use it all over as opposed to just tattoos.
Be careful with you tattoo always and forever. Obviously, if you cut, burn, etc. the skin covering the tattoo, you’re going to damage it. Scars don’t make an attractive tattoo addition.
Accidents do occassionally happen though, but don’t panic. Take care of the wound (cleaning, antibiotic ointment, no picking the scab, etc.) and see your tattoo artist after it has healed if there is visible damage to the tattoo. They can usually cover up flaws as long as the damage is not extensive (ie. don’t expect them to work a miracle with a 3 inch raised scar).
Hope this helped…I don’t think that I forgot anything…Good luck!
